My favorite part of this first song has to be the bridge that contains the lyric "Teach us how to pray. Could we be a prayerful people? Shake us up today, Lord!" That's the call I've heard as we've sat in meetings with the staff and lay leadership of our church. In January our pastor gave a message titled "Prayer." I invite you to check it out if you haven't heard it.

This song was powerful in worship today. Special thanks to John Zumwalt for illuminating new dimensions to the story where Jesus raises a man from the dead in Luke 7.

We've also been reading Dallas Willard's Renovation of the Heart in my small group. There's one section where he goes on in detail about a treasure and its vessels. The treasure is Christ and while the vessel may be always changing as culture changes, we Christians are called to be the carriers of the Gospel. Where are you carrying Christ? Food for thought.

The following is an article from a church newsletter from the summer of 2007. It seemed appropriate to post here on the new WorshipBlog.

Isn't it often true that the accomplishments we're most proud of are the tasks we were not certain we could complete in the first place? We stretch ourselves beyond our skill sets toward loftier goals and put our fears of achieving the merely ordinary behind us. It’s our willingness to be stretched which takes us to new heights of success.

For me worship has always been like working out. You can get in a good rhythm where each time it’s easier to stretch yourself emotionally, spiritually, creatively, and physically toward a more meaningful connection with the creator if the universe. If I let myself become complacent in going through motions without pushing past my limits, I will lose the ability to reach that point of productivity and growth and I’ll fail to touch the heart of God in a way that blesses Him.

I love to go back and look at old home videos. I can remember getting together with my brothers to cook up wacky ideas to entertain my parents. The most memorable of the performances involved dancing with plastic guitars while sporting underwear on our heads. I enjoy watching them now as an adult and experiencing the spectacle from the perspective of my parents. How silly we must have seemed. Living in a world that thrives on being consumers of entertainment I can’t help but think that we inherit this trait from our creator. He delights in our creativity whether simple or complex, our performances however silly they may seem, and in our sincere expressions of gratitude. There are often points where God shows up in our worship and gives us something in return but this is not what our worship should be about. Worship is reactionary. It’s the outward expression of an inward desire to be pleasing to God. We shouldn’t enter his presence expecting to receive but rather with the desire to create unique praise offerings for the mere purpose of bringing Him enjoyment.

Some expressions of worship rarely come naturally and often unique expressions are difficult in a corporate worship setting. Nevertheless, we must stretch ourselves outside of our comfort zones to reach new creative heights to please the heart of God. As you enter the sanctuary this Sunday morning, I invite you to prepare to branch out. Jeff is going to preach on the seven Hebrew words of praise and we will all undoubtedly be pushed to limit of our comfort zones. Let’s leave our inhibitions at home and come ready to outdo ourselves in a concert of praise.
